Sam rehabbing after surgery
Written by Lee Sullivan
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Thanks to a tremendous outpouring of support and compassion from folks throughout the Lake Norman community, Sam the Jack Russell Terrier has undergone surgery for his shattered leg and has begun an eight-week recovery period at Harbor Point Animal Hospital in Cornelius.
Sam, with a bandaged but broken right hind leg, was abandoned last month at an apartment complex in Cornelius. Resident Kathy Stallard rescued Sam and took him to Harbor Point Animal Hospital where Dr. Lori Hoe and the entire MSVH staff got intimately involved in his care.
After X-rays, a thorough exam and new bandages, Sam required much more extensive treatment. The Citizen and a vast combination of social media and word-of-mouth campaigns helped spread the word of Sam’s plight and animal lovers and others in the region responded. More than $2,600 flowed in to help Sam’s cause, and Hoe worked diligently to oversee Sam’s treatments. This week, Hoe and the MSVH staff distributed this note updating Sam’s status and thanking those who helped make his treatment possible:
“Harbor Point Animal Hospital would like to express our sincere appreciation for your generous donations. Thank You! Your compassion has provided Sam with the best chance for recovering the use of his broken leg.
“Due to the age and complexity of Sam’s break, Harbor Point referred him to the Veterinary Referral Hospital of Hickory, where a board-certified orthopedic surgeon reduced and stabilized his fracture with a bone graft, bone plate and bone screws. The surgery took place on Thursday, May 9.
“The following day, Sam returned to Harbor Point where he will rest for the next eight weeks under steady supervision, providing him the best chance for recovery. In eight weeks (early July) Harbor Point will take follow up X-rays to determine if the bone has healed. It is going to be a long road, but we are doing everything we can for Sam: giving him love, rest and time to heal!
“We are so amazed at the support and generosity from the community. Sam thanks you for his second chance. We welcome anyone that would like to visit Sam to stop by our hospital, 20306 N. Main St. in Cornelius. He gives great doggie kisses!
“Notes on his progress will also be posted on our Harbor Point Veterinary Facebook page and our website, HYPERLINK “http://www.mainstreetveterinary.com/blog/” mainstreet.brightflow.net/blog/.
“Thank you again for your generosity and compassion.”
